In today’s Gospel story we are immersed in a conflictual story. Is it better to ensure that everything is in order in our relationship with Jesus or to simply give thanks to Jesus? It is the ancient story of Martha and Mary. One commentator suggests that it’s a distinction between the “business of religion” as opposed to the “simplicity of faith”. Maybe we sometimes try too hard to conform to religious externals rather than simply giving thanks for the gift of faith that has been visited upon us. It is encouraging for us to be reminded that when Jesus Christ came into our world he demanded little more than to love God and love each other. All of the other religious “business” should flow from our love of God and love of neighbour – Not the other way around. We, like Martha, are invited to choose the better course.
